Anacortes - Tantelizing & Delicious PDF Print E-mail

Last weekend we made our annual trip to Anacortes, and I think that this year gave me more pause in my reflections on life then ever before.  I never really realized why the location holds so much importance to me, but in retrospect I realize it is one of the few places that truly holds positive memories for me.  From the memories of the ferry right,  saving the baby whale, to the bunnies at the Deception pass campground, to the last three trips since we found geocaching.  Every memory is a happy one - with no negativity which is rare in my life.

So tonight I sit back with a glass of wine and reflect back on the joys of a life more traveled, and the unconventional roads it has taken me as we look at the caches and adventures we uncovered over a few days.

2 Awesome Years of Caching = 1,194 km, 3 days and 38 caches PDF Print E-mail

Disclaimer - pictures in story are not indicative of the part of the story they are placed with - they are simply ones I liked from our weekend.

Last weekend we set out on a 3 day adventure celebrating what is most important to us - Time with each other away from the hecticness of life. Celebrating 2 years of adventures, exploring and seeing the road less traveled the way others wanted you to see it. This totaled from leaving the house to coming back 1,194 KM over the 3 days and claiming 38 new caches. For many that we know that simply would be enough, but for us the caches are what leads us, not why we're there - if that makes any sense. It's about what we see - and if anyone knows us they know we get distracted easily!

Galiano

A while ago I sent out the call asking for stories about how your values match up with caching - how do the 2 inter-relate?  Well we got a great reply from Disney Girl - my annual United Way donation of $500 will be going towards her charity of choice - Matthew's House in Abbotsford.  A huge thank you for sharing!  In this day and age it's nice to team up with others to make a difference.  Here is her Story:

Cruising Mt. Baker PDF Print E-mail

Trail route on EveryTrails.com and the YouTube video are at the end of the story.....

On Saturday Oct 24 Ken and I headed south into the U.S. to meet a group from PNW Adventures group. This group is into exploring back roads and off road areas in the Pacific North West.

We met up with the group in Lyman on Hwy #20 a few miles east of Sedro-Wooley, arriving with only 3 minutes to spare before the official departure time. Not bad timing considering we drove down from Maple Ridge BC to be there for 9.00 AM!

We piled into our 4X4's, 6 vehicles in all, and headed further east on Hwy #20 looking for Baker Road which would take us into the Mt Baker National Forest. As it turned out, we wouldn't have any use of the 4X4 side of our vehicles today, as the roads we chose were either paved or well groomed, moderately inclined gravel forest service roads.

We explored several roads that ended in mountain bowls; we checked out a snow mobile area, and drove up to a small parking area that provided an excellent view of a nearby glacier. At least that's what we think we did. The pockets of low hanging clouds obscured our view of the glacier, which, according to Mark, the trip leader, is something quite beautiful to see.

Down the mountain road we went, back to the main paved road that ran north along side Baker Lake, and followed the road past the end of the paved section until it too turned into a groomed FSR. We went as far as the end of Baker lake, were we spent some time enjoying a late lunch, the scenery, and some good company.

Jason Grafstrom’s hobby is so addictive that he has amassed the 12th most “finds” of anyone in B.C.

Paul Laviolette enjoys it so much that he often ventures into the wilderness on his ATV in search of a new discovery.

The two are among those in the Fraser Valley who are aficionados of the modern-day form of treasure hunting known as geocaching.

The growing pastime involves participants using a global positioning system (GPS) and other navigational techniques to track down hidden containers – known as geocaches or, simply, caches – around the world.

Co-ordinates for the geocaches are posted on websites.

A cache is usually a waterproof container, such as an ammo can, in which a small trinket or special coin is typically stored, along with a logbook for finders to sign.
