A cache born of a tale – and here is the tale!
Ok - If you must laugh now - at least we can - yes we did manage to take this very straight forward cache and turn it into another adventure to live in our memories forever. This Cache will forever remain in our minds as the why we are buying a "SPOT" - and then we can give the number to Mercrocks so when Mrs. Turtle sets it off he will know and can bring her a calming sedative after watching Mr. Turtle flip the Tank and rescuing them. Luckily let me say that did not happen but almost did.
You see we haven't cached in a while and were happy to have some down time this weekend where we could get a few caches and see a few new sites. We headed out to Wolfe Lake view and were able to get the first one but the Turtle Tank Tires were not fit for heading up a bit higher as the compact snow and ice doesn't fit the Swampers quite the right way and we didn't want to end up sliding the wrong way off the mountain so we opted to give up on the higher one and head to another one - this one.
We headed back to Princeton - aired back up and headed down the road that has become so familiar to us and quickly found our way to August Lake. Now I know in the instructions it says don't take the first right. However we did not understand which first right that referred to - it could have been any first right. Let me rephrase! - DO NOT TAKE THE FIRST RIGHT THAT LEADS TO A GOAT TRAIL THAT IS ATV FRIENDLY the road to the cache is fine for a 6500 pound suburban. The goat trail is not friendly for a 6500 pound suburban unless you have very good guardian angels.
We took what appeared to be a proper road - ATV friendly and one that the Civic could go down - we followed it until it ended - we then backed up a bit and found where it had split off. We then angled the truck correctly to get it started up the goat trail. Mr. Turtle was all ready to take it - Mrs. Turtle had her doubts but has learned that she tends to be over anxiety ridden on these moments and that in Mr. Turtle we trust so over the last few years she has stopped speaking up when she doesn't like a road. Mr. Turtle would never lead us wrong and take us where there could be an issue - would he?
The start of the road was fine - up we went until they got to a bit of a divot - there was a tree near there - then all of a sudden the truck moved well slid to the left down the cliff about 3 feet without us asking it to. Did Mrs. Turtle Scream? No - did she start to hyperventilate yes - and calmly said “I WANT OUT NOW!!" to which Mr. Turtle replied in a moment as he couldn't let her out quite yet. He then had to move the truck just to the right spot to let her out - she failed to notice that he was trembling - he let her out and she didn't think to suggest the child leave the vehicle as well as she assumed she was over reacting. After Mrs. Turtle vacated the vehicle- Mr. Turtle stated to the child in the back to get down on the floor and be ready to roll - Child did not opt to leave the vehicle -
She walked up the hill not watching - thinking she should have brought a brown paper bag, and listening to the truck - now in Mr. Turtles words - he does not understand why the truck did not roll - at the point Mrs. Turtle left the only explanation he has is that the guardian angels kept is steady. He has not trembled that bad since rolling trucks in his 20's -
We were at this point going to go home but opted to try seeing where the other road lead us - and it lead us to a beautiful place with an amazing view and a cool tree with some history in it.
So lessons learned - Clarify which Right Turn not to take, Mrs. Turtle is now allowed to state her opinion before going up the hill & Buy Spot and give Mercrocks the info so he can bring Mrs. Turtle a cold beer while digging Mr. Turtle out - as if the truck has rolled and the VHF antenna is upside down it ain't going to work. (Thinking I should increase the life insurance) evil laugh!
Thank you for the memory - !
